Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

Adjusting from J-1 (expired) to Permanent Resident through marriage:

I posted this on our September 2009 forum:

Our experience was absolutely painless. 10 minutes or so. The interviewer was very official at the beginning and chose (seemingly at random) several questions directed at my wife from the application. "What is your full name?" "What is your address?" "What is your father's and mother's first name?" "When is your birthday?" Then she asked if I had been previously married. She also asked what I believe to be kind of a trick question. My wife is here on a J1 and the interviewer asked where in the states she had enrolled in school. "You're a student right? Where are you enrolled in school?" My wife corrected her stating that she was here on work/travel but was a student when she applied for the J1. She then asked if we had any further evidence we'd like to add to the file supporting a bonafide marriage. We added our cell phone records, joint-bank rec... read complete review

Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

So we had our interview today in Memphis, TN.

Its a 3.5 hr drive down there, so we left at 8 AM to get there by our appt time of 2 PM (and give us plenty of time to eat, etc.)

We got to the parking lot of the building at about 1:30 PM, and went inside and passed through security. The guards told us to go through the first door and then go into the only open door on the right. It was super easy to find. (The building is very small, much smaller than what I was expecting, but anyways....)

I went in and put our appt letter in the slot in the wall. It said something like "Put your appt letter in this slot and then wait for your name to be called." So I put it in there and we sat down.

Our appt time was scheduled for 2 PM, but at about 1:40 (after only 5 minutes or so of waiting) a rather sour-looking white-haired man that was about 55 years old or so opened the door and called my wife's name. So we went into the back with him and ... read complete review

The Officer was clearly aggressive and confrontational in posture. The civil surgeon had not responded to all the sections on the medical form which caused us to acquire more information. The Officer asked my wife a few questions to confirm her response matched the completed information then asked for a copy of our 2006 tax return and my birth certificate and the interview was over in 10 minutes. He gave us a blue sheet of paper which indicated we were to send the medical information back to Memphis within 30 days. We Fedex'ed the information to him the same day and are waiting for a ruling. We are not required to go back for another interview according to the Officer.
